N. Essays in Nuclear Astrophysics. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1982. The Light Nuclei FAY AJZENBERG-SELOVEt University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104 USA Introduction The light nuclei with mass number A = 5 to 20 have been widely studied during the past 30 years. Each year over 1,000 papers are published reporting theoretical and experimental studies of these nuclei. Why is so much attention paid to the nuclei with A = 5 - 20? (1) Since relatively few nucleons are involved, both the theoretical and the experimental studies are generally simpler than for heavy nuclei.

We now see that we can define a total strength, B, and strength distribution, S, for each of H(F) and H(GT) as per Eqs. (17a,b). It is not hard to also see that, except for a few cases, all in light nuclei, Band S are not observable quantities via {3 decay simply because {3 decay will connect only a very few final states If> to the initial state Ii> because energy conservation forbids it. The remarkable development of the last few years in nuclear reaction physics is, as mentioned, that using the (p, n) or (proton, neutron) reaction at proton energies of ~ 100 MeV to ~ 200 Me V it has become possible to observe most if not all of S(GT), the GT strength distribution 17.

Analogous to damping by friction. One may use a nuclear model in which the ordered dipole vibrations of protons and neutrons in opposite directions correspond to well defined quantum states. Coupling with other degrees of freedom will broaden these states. Our resonance will then correspond to the transition of the nucleus from the lowest state to the first excited state of the dipole vibration. A more complete nuclear model will include from the beginning the coupling between the dipole vibration and the other nuclear motions.
